Critical Mass by Sara Paretsky

V. I. Warshawski’s closest friend in Chicago is Lotty Herschel who escaped to London in 1939 with her playmate, Kitty Saginor Binder. V. I. is summoned to help Kitty’s daughter when her life is endangered by secrets that go back to the research and development of the first atomic bomb.
